Germany’s renown, Rohde & Schwarz Company, a leader in the design, development and production of highly technological equipment, boasts among its roster of illustrious clients a number of private companies and public institutions, as well as the armed forces.
Rohde & Schwarz was founded back in the 30’ and now, 70 years later, it has offices all over the world.
The company headquarters is located at No. 15 Mühldorfstraße in Munich: the so-called Technologiezentrum. This centre is a 35 million-euro facility that is laid out over a surface area of some 16,000 square meters, containing both offices and workshops.
The job of the designer is to create a work environment capable of stimulating creativity in the people intended to occupy the space he has fashioned.
The Technologiezentrum is composed of five structures connected to one another by means of an imposing entry area featuring lots of glass and aluminium, achieving stunning aesthetic results. Natural light easily penetrates the structure through large windows, creating a luminous interior. The roof of the building constitutes a sort of window onto the sky above and by simply looking upward one can admire its ever-changing colours.
This architectural device imbues the facility with an especially dramatic “open-air” feeling. 60x30 slabs of Ardesia Nera and Ardesia Cinza were employed for this entry area, considered to be the most important part of the entire complex. These particular ceramic materials blend perfectly with the overarching formal and aesthetic theme of the structure, while at the same time guaranteeing all the heavy-duty performance properties necessary for a floor exposed to high volumes of foot traffic.
The checker-board pattern of the installation scheme makes a dramatic statement: the slabs of Ardesia Nera and Ardesia Cinza have been alternated in a carefully studied sequence, making this central part of the complex extremely attractive and eye-catching.
The offices and public spaces, laid out over 5 floors, feature Ardesia Nera and Cinza in the slate finish and the following sizes: 60x60, 40x40 and 30x30.
The firm responsible for the design is headed by an architect by the name of Heese, one of the most important design professionals in Bavaria.
